The Capital Area Wrestling League (CAWL) is a kids (up to 15 years old) amateur wrestling league in the Washington DC metropolitan area. The CAWL consists of about 16 teams that practice and compete during the late fall and winter months. Most teams are active from around the beginning of November to early March. Among other things the League strives to prepare wrestlers for high school wrestling and teach good sportsmanship. Weight classes range from 50 pounds to heavyweight (200 pounds) with increments of 5 pounds up to the 115 pound weight class, and 7, 8, 15, 20, 35 pound increments after 115 pounds. There is a 200 pound limit heavyweight class in the CAWL. All teams participate in dual meets during the season and finish with the CAWL League Championships at the end of the season. The CAWL preseason open tournament in early December is a fund raiser and all CAWL wrestlers are strongly encouraged to participate.
In early March the CAWL League Championships tournament is held. The
top six wrestlers in the CAWL Championships at each weight class receive
awards. The top six finishers may
qualify to wrestle in the Maryland/Virginia States Association Championships
("MD/VA States"). High school JV wrestlers are eligible to
participate in the CAWL championships, but do not advance to the MD/VA
States. The MD/VA States is a two-day competition about one week
following the CAWL Championships. The CAWL Champioinships and the MDVA States
are the last CAWL events of the season. Wrestlers and their families and
coaches from three leagues - Washington (CAWL), Baltimore (MJWL), and Arundel
(AAWL) areas - join in these season finales. The top eight wrestlers at
each weight class receive MD/VA States Championships awards and the top three
teams receive awards.
