CAWL Preseason 2007-2008 Results
Feb. 13, BATTLE OF THE BELTWAY RESULTS
Maryland CAWL avenged last season's loss to Virginal CAWL to win the junior Battle of the Beltway by a score of 42 - 37. The outcome of the dual meet came down to the last bout as Jonathon Simmons of the Bandits defeated Ryan Forrest of the Matdogs in overtime by a takedown. In the second meet the University of Maryland Terps defeated the American University Eagles 37 - 14 to win the college Battle of the Beltway. For detailed results click here.

Josh Glenn Championship Banner and AU vs. Delaware State Match
On Saturday at 4:00 PM, December 8, 2007 prior to the American University versus Delaware State home wrestling match at Bender Arena, a ceremony will take place to honor National Champion Josh Glenn. Don't miss Glenn in action for the first time this season and the ceremony, which will include a championship banner being raised to the rafters of Bender Arena to mark Glenn's historical sports achievement in the Washington/Maryland/Virginia region!
On a cold March day back in the spring of 2007 in front of a packed crowd in Detroit, Michigan many wrestling fans nationwide watched the event unfold live on ESPN as the Eagle's Josh Glenn won the NCAA title in overtime. With Coach Mark Cody in his corner the AU wrestler beat Kurt Backes of Iowa State with a takedown in overtime to win the NCAA Division I 197 pound title. For Coach Cody and the Eagles' wrestling team it was an enjoyable end of yet another successful season in which the team has boasted of at least one All American over the last three seasons. Glenn is back in the 2007-08 season to defend his title in his senior year and last year of college wrestling.
Please come and join in supporting Glenn and the Eagles wrestling team on Saturday, December 4 at four o'clock in the afternoon for the ceremony and the match.
2006-2007
COLLEGE WRESTLING
For junior leaguers who follow college wrestling, several local Division I
colleges finished their 2006-07 wrestling seasons at the NCAA Championships in
Detroit, Michigan on Sat., March 17, 2007.
American University in Washington DC and wrestling coach Mark Cody
celebrated
the school's first ever Division I national champion. AU's 197 lber. Josh
Glenn won the NCAA Division I title with a dramatic 6 - 4 overtime victory in the finals
over Kurt Backes of Iowa State. Coach Bruce Burnett's Midshipmen of the
US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland celebrated Matt Stolpinsky's (4th
place) All American accomplishment at 174 lbs. Other local schools
competing in the 3-day tournament were
Maryland,
Old Dominion,
Virginia,
Virginia Tech, and
VMI. Former CAWL wrestlers and 2007 seniors, Max Meltzer, 141
lbs., Harvard, and Matt Palmer, 174 lbs., Columbia, captured All American
honors at the 2007 NCAA Championships.

CAWL Defeats AAWL All Stars 67-18 and Loses to MJWL All Stars 53-32
Virginia Wins MD/VA CAWL All Stars Match 44-31
New Weight Classes Both the CAWL and the MD/VA States Association added a new 165 pound weight class and consolidated the 100, 105, and 110 pound weight classes down to 101 and 108 pounds for the 2006-07 season. The new CAWL and MD/VA States Association weight classes for the 2006-07 season are:
50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, 101, 108, 115, 122, 130, 140, 150, 165, 185 (200 for CAWL)
The maximum weight is 185 pounds for the MD/VA States Association tournament.
New Age Limits in Lightweight Classes (Go to Coaches page and see CAWL Weight Classes)
New OT Rule Both the CAWL and the MD/VA States Association will follow the NFHS Wrestling rule change for overtime for the 2006-07 season. The new rule states:
If no score occurs in the one
minute sudden-victory period, two 30-second tiebreakers will take place.
Scoring in these two tiebreakers will be conducted as in a regular match.
If the score remains tied at the conclusion of the two tiebreakers, one
additional 30-second period will be conducted, with the first person
scoring declared the winner. If no points are scored, the offensive
wrestler wins the match.
Previously, only one 30-second tiebreaker was conducted after the
one-minute overtime period. The new rule provides for one additional
30-second tiebreaker and another 30-second period if the score remains
tied after the tiebreakers.
2007 UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND COACHES CLINIC We are planning to have our Univ. of Maryland Coaches Clinic again this year on Oct 25 & 26 to coincide with our Red & Black wrestle offs on Thursday Oct 25. We are in the process of adding the Bronze Certification to the coaches clinic but wanted to know the interest level for the Certification before we added it to the clinic schedule. This is a great opportunity to add to your coaching style. If we have a list of 10+ individuals that want to get Bronze Certified then we will go ahead an add it to the clinic schedule. There is a fee with the certification. Please either reply on the forum or you can email me at tfb@umd.edu and let me know that you would like to take the certification.
