Three AU Wrestlers Ranked in Top-20 in Latest NWCA/Intermat Rankings

Mike Cannon joins Adam LoPiccolo and Josh Glenn in nation's elite

Jan. 9, 2007

WASHINGTON - For the third straight year, the American University wrestling team can boast of having three individuals ranked in the country's top-20 as No. 17 Mike Cannon joined No. 6 Adam LoPiccolo and No. 9 Josh Glenn in the latest Intermat/NWCA rankings released Tuesday. The trio each won all of their matches at the Arizona State Duals over the weekend and placed at the Midlands Tournament the week earlier.

An impressive 15-3 record capped by an 8-2 win this past weekend over the formerly ninth-ranked wrestler in the country propelled Cannon into the nation's top-20. The redshirt freshman, who is also one of three team captains, has only lost to top-11 (or higher) ranked opponents this season. The weekend previous to the ASU Duals, Cannon became one of just five Eagles in history to place at the Midlands Tournament, taking eighth. He is 8-1 in duals and is one of four EIWA 165 lb. grapplers in the top-20.

Both Glenn and LoPiccolo remained at their rankings from the previous week. Glenn, who two weeks ago claimed third at the Midlands Tournament for the second year in a row, continued his dominant wrestling with three wins over the weekend. Fellow junior LoPiccolo, who has already set a season-best in falls with an EIWA-leading 13, is just one win shy of his career-best 25 victories from 2005-06. The Glen Rock, Pa. native has five wins over ranked opponents in 2006-07 and took a career-best fifth at Midlands two weeks ago. This past weekend he earned three wins by fall, including a second period pin of EIWA foe No. 15 Paul Weibel of Lehigh.

American has had three wrestlers ranked in the top-20 in each of the last three seasons. In 2004-05, All-American Daniel Waters and Muzaffar Abdurakhmanov as well as a freshman Glenn earned top-20 status by year's end. Last season, Glenn, LoPiccolo and Abdurakhmanov were all ranked in the top-10 as they led the team to a program best 17th-place at the NCAA Championships.

The current trio will lead the Eagles into action tomorrow afternoon in Bender Arena as the team hosts a tri-meet versus Campbell at 1 p.m. followed by Delaware State at 3 p.m.
